Staying Hydrated This Summer

June 22, 2018

We all know that water is critical for our overall health and well-being but some people find it really hard to drink plain water.  Infusing your water with herbs and fruits can help you get the water in but also add nutrients!

You can prepare infused waters up to a week in advance and keep them in the fridge.  Even have a few different ones in the fridge to create some variety.  You do not need a special pitcher or bottle, however many shops are selling water bottles with infusers built right in!  Frozen fruits can be added to these bottles to chill and flavour your water at the same time!

HOW TO MAKE INFUSED WATER

Use a large pitcher and add 1 cup of fruit and/or vegetables to 3 tablespoons of fresh herbs.  Add water to the top and let sit for 1 hour before refrigerating.

WHAT SHOULD I ADD TO MY WATER?

Many things infuse well in water.  Berries, cucumber, lemon, lime, melon and mango are favourites!  Try thyme, mint, basil or ginger with the fruit and veggies.

Here are some great combinations

  • Strawberry, lemon, basil
  • Mango, basil
  • Watermelon, mint
  • Cucumber, strawberry, thyme
  • Blueberry, pomegranate, mint

Staying hydrated on hot summer days is important and will reduce muscle cramping.  It’s also great for hair, skin and nails, and organ function.  Also – often we feel hungry when we are in fact dehydrated so start each day with a glass or two of water and drink it throughout to keep eating for hunger and drinking for hydration.
